'Palma africana', Collage, indian ink and pencil on paper by Jorge Lacarra (Buenos Aires 1938).
Description: Jorge Lacarra attended the Academy of Fine Arts 'Manuel Belgrano' and then the Academy of Fine Arts 'Prilidiano Pueyrredon' where he studied set design and costumes with set designer Mario Vanarelli (Buenos Aires, 1917 - 2005).
After his graduation, when he was 20, he moved first to Rome - where he attended for two years the Academy of Fine Arts in via di Ripetta - and then to Paris to study French at the Sorbonne University. Before returning to Argentina, he visited some of the major European cities. Back in his home town, in the early '60s, he began working as a set designer and costume designer for theater and cinema, as well as interior designer in some shops, restaurants and commercial enterprises. At the same time he held the position of Art Director of the Buenos Aires branch of “Harrods”.
In 1971 he left for Mexico, to work as Art Director in the film 'The Bridge in the Jungle', directed by Pancho Kohner (Los Angeles, USA, 1939) with John Huston (Nevada, United States, 1906 - Middletown, 1987) and the great Mexican actress Katy Jurado (Guadalajara, Mexico, 1924 - Cuernavaca 2002).
The following year, after going back to Buenos Aires, he decided to return to Rome, where he started working as a freelance for the 'Design 2000' company. In such a context he designed: the interior of the Oman embassy in Rome, the new showroom of the company, a villa in Divon in France. In addition he worked several times in Saudi Arabia and made the interior decoration of villas and apartments in Porto Cervo.
Later other commissions took him in Bahrain where he designed the interiors of a private clinic, and in Bophuthatswana, South Africa, as interior designer of an Italian businessman two villas. He furnished an apartment for the same businessman in Palazzo Odescalchi in Rome.
Among the other works of Jorge Lacarra we can mention those he carried out at the Italian Embassy in Helsinki, the Hotel 'Il Pellicano' in Porto Ercole and the Hotel 'La Posta Vecchia' in Palo Laziale, both part of the hotel chain Relais & Châteaux, as well as several private homes at Garda Lake and in Venice, Madrid, Paris and Rome.
He currently lives and works in Rome.

Interview with the author

Q. Why Collages? A. I have always loved colors, especially the strong ones. I love nuances too. I think that in any creation there is a significant part of 'mind' and another - impossible to say how much - of 'feeling', of something inside yourself that tells you: 'yes'! That's right!

Q. How do you choose your 'patterns'? What is your way of working? A. The subjects I am interested in are different. In this moment of my life I choose nature, imaginary or real, but always magical. Palm trees, forests, flowers. Rocks that do not exist today but tomorrow... who knows? In any case, it doesn't matter. All this began one day while I was sorting different pieces of colored papers and laying them on a large white sheet that was on the table. In that moment I felt a new emotion, a force that pushed me to move on the white sheet the pieces of colored paper that I was cutting following a... I do not know. That was my first, beloved, Collage.

Q. Finally, what do you think is the significance of a Collage? A. I believe the strength and simplicity of the message arises from the fact that the creator can see already, from the beginning, some of the main elements of the shape that will be defined by colors. What you actually feel will guide you in finding the perfect emotion that you want to communicate. You get closer and closer to such an emotion by modifying, doubting and finally deciding. A lovely shape emerges from emotions, time devoted to find it, thinking and reflection, technical skill, and from patience and mistakes. Oh I was forgetting... the best thing. The joy that what you have created on the basis of your heart and your mind can give to you. If you allow me I would like to conclude with citation from Max Ernst, that I find very funny and fully truth:

'Si ce sont les plumes qui font le plumage, ce n’est pas la colle qui fait le collage' (published in 1937 in 'Cahiers d’Art').
